A Global Workspace in Language Models

Anthropic researchers found a “J-space” inside Claude, word-linked patterns acting like the global workspace from consciousness research. Claude can report and modulate what’s active in it, and uses it to mediate multi-step reasoning. It emerged in training rather than by design.
